CommTek Communications Corporation was founded by entrepreneur and visionary David G. Wolford in 1979, when he launched SAT-Guide magazine, the only guide to programming on the U.S. domestic satellites. Having formerly been owner of Sun Valley Cablevision, Mr. Wolford was familiar with both the cable and satellite industries.
In 1982, CommTek's second magazine, Satellite ORBIT, was introduced to serve both system retailers and owners of home satellite C-band systems, and within a year had more than 180,000 subscribers. In 1985, CommTek was recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in the U.S., when it was ranked No. 23 in the Inc. 500, a compilation of the hottest mid-sized companies. Since its inception 17 years ago, Satellite ORBIT has maintained its position as the C-band market leader.
As the face of satellite television began to change and legislation threatened the home viewer's rights, CommTek became involved in lobbying efforts on Capitol Hill. In 1987, it moved its corporate headquarters to Northern Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C.
In 1994, CommTek introduced Satellite DIRECT to serve as the programming guide for consumers who owned the DIRECTV system. The excitement generated from this dynamic industry aided CommTek in reaching a new plateau. According to Capell's 1997 Circulation Report, Satellite DIRECT had posted a 47.3-percent gain and was ranked #7 in the country's Top 10 Gainers. For the second straight year, Satellite DIRECT was listed in this prestigious category. Once again, as it did with Satellite ORBIT, CommTek seized the forefront of the home satellite industry. To this day, it maintains the lion's share of the market.
Today, CommTek has a stellar reputation in the satellite industry and magazine publishing arena as the premier publisher of satellite TV programming guides. Additionally, CommTek has expanded into contract publishing, which includes a version of Satellite ORBIT for National Programming Services. David Wolford and his executive management team are prepared to meet the challenges that come with substantial industry growth while expanding into other areas of media services.
